Participants: 20 Local Community Members

We are excited to share the success of our recent “Workshop on Composting and Sustainable Practices,” where we brought together 20 enthusiastic community members, including youth and adults, to learn about effective composting techniques, waste reduction, and sustainable living practices.

Workshop Overview:

Our workshop was designed to equip participants with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in creating and maintaining compost systems, as well as adopting sustainable habits that benefit both the environment and the community. The event was part of our ongoing “Rural Youth Empowerment: Bridging the Gap for Environmental Advocacy” project, which aims to foster environmental stewardship among marginalized communities.

Key Topics Covered:

  1. Introduction to Composting:
    • What is composting and why it’s important?
    • The science behind composting: how organic matter breaks down and enriches soil.
    • The benefits of composting for your garden, community, and the planet.
  2. Compostable Materials:
    • Understanding the difference between “greens” (nitrogen-rich) and “browns” (carbon-rich).
    • A detailed list of what can and cannot be composted.
    • The importance of maintaining the right balance for effective composting.
  3. Setting Up Your Compost System:
    • Choosing the right location for your compost bin or pile.
    • Step-by-step instructions on building a compost pile.
    • Tips for keeping your compost pile healthy and odor-free.
  4. Maintaining and Harvesting Compost:
    • How to aerate and turn your compost for faster decomposition.
    • Monitoring moisture levels and adding water when necessary.
    • Identifying when compost is ready to be harvested and how to use it in gardens.
  5. Sustainable Living Practices:
    • Simple, everyday practices to reduce waste and live sustainably.
    • Reducing reliance on single-use plastics.
    • Water conservation techniques and energy-saving tips.

Hands-On Activities:

Participants were given the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, including building a compost pile using locally sourced materials and learning how to properly maintain it. We also demonstrated how to use finished compost in gardening, showing the immediate benefits of this rich, natural fertilizer.

Community Impact:

The workshop not only provided valuable education but also fostered a sense of community among participants, who were eager to take what they learned and apply it in their own homes and neighborhoods. By the end of the workshop, participants expressed a strong commitment to continuing these practices and sharing their knowledge with others.

Looking Ahead:

This workshop is just one of many initiatives we are undertaking as part of our broader project to empower rural youth and communities through environmental advocacy. We look forward to hosting more events like this and continuing to work together for a greener, more sustainable future.

This project is co-funded by Youth and Environment Europe (YEE).
Together, we are working towards a greener, more inclusive, and competitive Europe.

About the Project:

This workshop is part of the “Rural Youth Empowerment: Bridging the Gap for Environmental Advocacy” project, which aims to empower youth from marginalized communities by engaging them in environmental advocacy and sustainable development. The project includes a series of workshops, community-based initiatives, and awareness campaigns designed to foster a deeper connection between youth and their environment.
